In fall 2022, we embarked on a four-week campaign to hear from nurses, educators and managers about their workforce experiences. In total, we heard from 2,163 people through the survey and 234 joined one of 22 facilitated conversations.
Thank you to everyone who participated, whether it was by adding thoughts in the survey, joining a conversation or simply sharing the opportunity with colleagues.
We have gathered this input into a report summarizing what we heard, the work we’ve accomplished to-date and what our next steps look like for the Nursing Workforce Strategy.

As a nurse, you care for Albertans of all ages, in nearly every setting across AHS. You are vital to the health and well-being of our province and workforce as a whole - and vital to our future. AHS is developing a Nursing Workforce Strategy to identify actions we can take to address short and long-term challenges and opportunities with our nursing workforce - improve retention, optimize nurse scope and expertise, and recruit as many nurses as possible. To do this, we need your input.
The steps we take today are critical, and we cannot take them without you. Whether you are new to AHS, mid-career or near retirement, your everyday experiences as a nurse, nurse manager or educator can inform where we go next.
Survey results will be shared back in a What We Heard report and used to inform the development of the Nursing Workforce Strategy.
The survey will be open from Sept. 22 to Nov. 4, 2022. Responses to the survey are anonymous. Please note that incomplete responses will not be captured in reporting.
Please note: This survey is for AHS nurses and nursing managers only. If you are not a AHS nurse and would like to provide comment, please email acno@ahs.ca.
