What is a Nursing Workforce Strategy?
The strategy defines practical actions for AHS to take to meet short and long-term future patient population and nursing workforce needs. Strategies set direction so that teams work, and resources are used, toward common goals—taking ideas and solutions, putting them together, and making them achievable.
Why do we need a Nursing Workforce Strategy?
The pandemic has affected the nursing profession. Workforce shortages are a global concern and health needs are evolving in the population.
The Strategy is a foundational guiding tool to ensure programs, tools and resources are coordinated and aligned to efficiently and effectively implemented actions with all necessary supports involved. As a document, a nursing workforce strategy gets everyone on the same page to work together with a common vision and direction.
How does this affect me?
Strategies define how we all need to work together to support recruitment, retention and workforce utilization. It is important that we hear from our point-of-care nurses and managers, internal partners as well as external stakeholders (Post-secondary Institutions, Associations and Colleges) to best understand the current challenges and opportunities that are relevant and meaningful to nurses in Alberta.
