Alberta Health Services understands that there is a lot of information available to Albertans about immunization. This can be stressful and confusing for parents and guardians.

AHS would like to hear from Alberta families about routine childhood immunization for children newborn to age 15 years. We want to talk to you about your thoughts, ideas, concerns, and opinions on immunizations, particularly for your children.

The survey below asked Albertans about their intention to have their children immunized against common childhood viruses and diseases. Parents were then asked what helped them to make a decision about childhood immunization, such as who or where they go to seek information. 8,938 Alberta parents and guardians responded to the survey between November 17 and December 31, 2022.

Our Public Health teams are now reviewing the information and perspectives provided, to guide how they provide Albertan parents with the information they need to make informed decisions about their children’s health.

Please check back to this page for future opportunities to engage. And if you have a question about routine childhood immunization, ask it below.

Thank you for your question. The vaccines included in Alberta’s routine immunization schedule have been used for decades to protect children from common childhood illnesses. We understand that there is a lot of information available to parents; it can feel overwhelming, and be hard to weigh the risks and the benefits. We therefore encourage parents to review the risks and safety of childhood immunizations in perspective.

You can learn more about the proven safety of Alberta’s routine vaccines here: https://www.immunizealberta.ca/should-i-immunize-my-child/risks-and-safety-perspective.

Thank you for your question. The vaccine for COVID-19 is not included in Alberta’s routine school immunization schedule because the COVID-19 immunization recommendations continue to adapt over time. Alberta Health has been updating the recommendations for school-aged children to reflect new vaccines as they become available as well as current disease epidemiology. Children 5 years of age and older have the ability to be immunized at a pharmacy, physician’s office, or AHS clinic at any time if they are eligible. This is a different than what is available within a school program, where an immunizer would attend the school only during a specified time each year.

Thank you for your question. AHS’ Public Health teams are currently reviewing the results of the survey conducted with parents, to determine the best way to meet the needs of Alberta families in regard to childhood immunization. Providing the option to vaccinate at schools is one of the considerations.

Later, I contracted polio, but thanks to having had the vaccines, I recovered, and went on to be a productive member of society. I will forever be grateful for those vaccines. This makes me in favour of vaccines, and my children and grandchildren have had their health protected by being able to be vaccinated. I am fully in favour of vaccinations for all, so that the population is protected from disease. Thank you for considering my opinion that science-based health care protects us all. on Facebook Share This is a comment, rather than a question. As a child, I received two polio vaccines. Thank you for your question. The vaccine for COVID-19 is not included in Alberta’s routine immunization schedule. By following this schedule, you and your child will be immunized against common childhood diseases at the safest and most effective ages and stages. This means you and your child will get the maximum possible protection.
