May 19-25, 2024 is National Paramedic Services Week, a time to honour the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) profession and recognize the professionals who provide this vital public service. Paramedic Services Week also offers an opportunity to better understand the important role EMS plays within the health care system, and for our communities.

Alberta’s EMS system is comprised of dedicated Emergency Medical Dispatchers, Inter-facility Transportation, community-based First Responders, as well EMS Practitioners in ground and air (rotary and fixed-wing) transport ambulances.

This year's national theme Help Us Help You is an opportunity to highlight the many ways that paramedic services help people, from the provision of emergency care for those critically ill and injured to the more contemporary role of paramedic services as part of a greater health system.

Join us as we celebrate these heroes and learn more about the incredible care they provide each and every day.

These 2 rockstars saved the day today getting my mom safely to the Royal Alex. They climbed up 40 stairs from her house to the street and were so amazingly courteous and helpful!!! Please pass on our huge thanks.

Thank you to the Medicine Hat Paramedics for the care and attention they showed my sister, Debbie Wilson.

Debbie had many health concerns through out her life but over the past few years it was either her heart, her kidney or her knees. Debbie had called 911 for the paramedics and they showed her such compassion and understanding regardless whether or not they had to take her in. They never made her feel that she was a burden but always made her feel important. Debbie passed January 11,2024, thank you so much for your amazing service and care. It will... Continue reading

    Compassionate care

Last year, I had the honour to go on a ride along with Conrad in a Paramedic Response Unit in Downtown Calgary. It was really incredible to see the care and diligence that paramedics deliver to patients every day.

My office had been downtown for many years, and we followed a route that I had walked hundreds of times. It was something to see how a paramedic looked at these familiar streets in a way much different than I had ever done - proactively checking to make sure that people were ok or needed help. Noticing the people that I... Continue reading

    Responding with Proficiency & Compassion

In the fall of 2022 I found my husband at the bottom of a ladder – he’d been 25 feet in the air, cleaning the eaves when the ladder slipped. The paramedics who arrived at our acreage north of Spruce Grove brought the right mix of proficiency and compassion as they assessed his vital status and prepared for transfer.

As the paramedics repeatedly asked how far he had fallen, it was clear they were surprised my husband was conscious and could move his toes. Their kind smiles and quips mixed gratitude with our fear as we realized just how much... Continue reading
