Consultation has concluded

In Spring 2023, Albertans will be able to search for and view public health inspection reports for pools, personal services, and childcare facilities here. Albertans have had online access to food facility inspection reports since 2008.

By enhancing online access to a broader range of public health inspection reports, this initiative will help Albertans make additional informed choices for themselves and their families. This information has always been available through AHS' request for information process; the change to online posting further improves accessibility.

The timeline for expanding our disclosure is as follows:

  • Pool facility inspections: March 1, 2023 - launched
  • Personal services facility inspections: April 3, 2023 - launched
  • Childcare facility inspections: June 1, 2023

    Can you confirm if the concentration of bleach stays the same in kitchen, rooms and laundry area in the Childcare centre. Also, if you can specify the concentration of bleach. Also, can you provide me a reference to your answer please.

    Thank you for your question. The bleach bottle's concentration stays the same for all daycare sanitizing purposes, including diapering, kitchen, classrooms, and laundry area. This concentration is 100 ppm which is equivalent to 2 ml of household (5%) bleach in one liter of water. This concentration changes when there is an outbreak at the daycare. In this case, we recommend a 1000 ppm chlorine solution, which is 20 ml of household bleach in one liter of water.

    Is it ok to have manual dishwashing for all the plates,glass, fork and spoons for our restaurant since we don't have a mechanical dishwasher? Thanks

    Hi Ayen,

    Manual dishwashing is an option for some businesses. As your business uses reusable plates, glasses, and cutlery, you would require a three-compartment sink for dishwashing (in addition to at least one handwashing sink).     what products can clean up opiod and fentanyl residue from a home?

    Hi Barbara,

    AHS Safe Healthy Environments (SHE) is not directly involved with the clean-up of fentanyl or other opioids in houses.  AHS is typically only made aware of properties where fentanyl/opioids have been produced or manufactured in large amounts, and as such, we require that a remediation contractor is retained to carry out decontamination of the residence. The remediation contractor will often use proprietary chemicals for the decontamination of the house, and proper decontamination is confirmed by surface sampling tests, the results of which are sent to AHS for verification. Product names or compositions are not disclosed to AHS. For more information about the proper clean-up of fentanyl in a house, please refer to the document here, or reach out to a remediation contractor that is knowledgeable in fentanyl decontamination.

    Hello. If I were to butcher an animal for someone and then charge them money to smoke the meat for them, am I legally allowed to do that with an outdoor smoker on my property? Thanks.

    Hi Kaleb,

    You must have a food permit when you prepare food and someone buys it from you. A few exceptions exist, such as bake sales and low-risk home-prepared foods. Preparing and selling meat would not be except.

    What is required for Sanitization Plans for a Group Home that houses youth from 12-17. The group home maximum capacity is 6. Is the operator required to use a Sanitizing step (Chlorine, QUATS etc.) or are they required to install a Commercial Dishwasher? Thank you.

    Thank you for your question.

    When there are fewer than 10 residents in the youth group home, you are not required to have a food permit nor follow the Food Regulation. We would, however, highly recommend practicing safe food handling to reduce the risk of food poisoning and the spread of illnesses. This would include using an approved sanitizer or the hottest temperature available in the home for sanitizing dishes and an approved sanitizer for surfaces. Disinfectants would also be recommended to help control outbreaks in the home. You would not be required to have a commercial dishwasher.

    For more information on requirements and recommendations, please review the Health and Safety Guidelines for Childcare Facilities. Appendix A provides safe food practices for child care with fewer than 10 residents.

    Does a animal food/treat business require a good handling permit and comply to ahs' guidelines if the product is not meant for human consumption?

    Animal/pet food businesses don't require a food handling permit from AHS. 

    Please note that there could be other requirements to consider including local business licensing. We also recommend reviewing documentation that may be applicable to your business such as the Guide for the Labelling and Advertising of Pet Foods.

    Reports for inspections that happen on  April 3, 2023, or later will be posted at www.ahs.ca/inspections. Reports for inspections that happened before April 3, 2023, will not be available online but you can request this information through our Record Search Request form. Please note that there could be a fee associated with this request.
