New Grande Prairie Hospital

A new regional hospital and cancer centre in Grande Prairie will help more northern patients receive specialized and complex care, closer to home and with shorter wait times. This hospital will function as a regional referral centre, providing health services to residents of northwestern Alberta and northeastern BC.

Construction of the new Grande Prairie hospital is progressing, with substantial completion expected in the summer of 2020. This will be followed by approximately nine months of commissioning prior to the hospital opening.

Photo Campaign - June 2020 update

In the spring of 2019 Alberta Health Services (AHS) hosted a photo campaign encouraging photographers to share pictures they had taken from anywhere throughout the area that the new Grande Prairie hospital will serve. This includes a vast swath of land from the boundary where Alberta meets the Northwest Territories, east to the areas around Fox Creek and High Prairie, south to the Rocky Mountains around Grande Cache, and west to the BC border.

We were overwhelmed by the volume and quality of amazing images we received. In the course of the three week submission period, more than 1,300 images were shared for consideration. More than 60 photos, shot and submitted by area residents, have been transformed into large scale permanent graphics adorning various walls throughout the new hospital.

These images, selected by a working group made up of volunteers including local staff and stakeholders, reflect the spirit of the region and the people who will use the new hospital. We are happy to be able to showcase the beauty and talent of our region in this way.

The campaign was open to all, including professional photographers who earn a living from their craft, as well as those who simply enjoy taking photos as a hobby. Photographers will retain copyright to their images and receive credit for their work. Photographers names and the title of their photo will appear on each graphic. Images will also be identified at a central location in the facility, accessible to all patients, staff and the public.

Thank you to all our working group volunteers and everyone who shared their photos with us through this campaign. We know that art, in its many forms, plays a vital role in wellness and healing. It is our hope that these timeless scenes will provide our patients, families and staff with inspiration and comfort for years to come.
