Tansi and good day. We want to engage those who may be served by the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital to help create a facility that reflects the people of the region. We are an incredibly diverse community, including people with a wide variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds; and we share this land with strong, proud Indigenous communities.
That’s why the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Indigenous Engagement Committee was formed to guide AHS and help to ensure the Grande Prairie Reginal Hospital is a culturally safe space for Indigenous patients and their families.
We want to hear from you. Please share your ideas below on how we can visually express a warm and inclusive welcome to the hospital, now and for years to come.
Respectfully,
Stacy Greening and Len Auger

Julesalmost 3 years agoPictures of our cultures, food, and flags of our diverse workforce in the building to show our diversity. Tastefully done obviously. Canada.
Maybe in the main hallway at the entrance, courtyards, basement walls. Carparks could be labelled using these ideas too. Areas of the buildings could be labelled this way too for example, including corridors. I lived in a community where every area had a special name.

This might not be what we might initially think of as a visual feature, but I think the hospital could offer foods that are traditional for the territory to inpatients for meals and visitors in the cafeteria. Also foods that reflect other people's cultural backgrounds in the area. Food is a major signal of belonging and respect in many cultures. It would be a visual feature in the cafeteria and a signal to patients that they belong. Signs and names for hospital areas that include Indigenous languages and names. Also, I want to add that I think the visual appearance of the hospital also includes the way staff treat people. I think the most important thing we need for a reconciliation-based hospital service is staff that understand their biases and are accountable. Staff that treat everyone with respect, and have an understanding of the current realities, issues, history and culture of the First Nation and metis people that live in this area. Staff doing this will also model that to other patients.
