Indigenous people and communities are experiencing challenges accessing and navigating services and care within the healthcare system. This is compounded by experiences of culturally unsafe care, racism, and incidents of harm.

The Alberta Health Services (AHS) Indigenous Health North Zone Program is creating a Zone Indigenous Health Action Plan to establish a foundational framework, including actions and objectives, to help guide our work in ensuring safe, holistic, accessible and culturally safe care is provided to everyone at AHS healthcare facilities. This work will be guided by patience, understanding, collaboration, communication, and a commitment to reconciliation.

We are committed to engaging and involving our Indigenous stakeholders and partners in the creation of this action plan. When we work together, we reach better decisions and greater understanding. The overall health system can benefit.

We invite you to review our Indigenous Health North Zone Action plan (located under Important Links) and then take our brief survey (located below). Feedback is anonymous, and no individual information is shared. Please share your thoughts with us by February 16, 2024.

If you would like to speak with us directly about this plan, please email: IndigenousHealthNZ@ahs.ca

After feedback is collected, we anticipate having the Indigenous Health Action plan published by Spring 2024.

We look forward to continuing to work with all Indigenous people, communities and partners to ensure an inclusive healthcare system that is welcoming and respectful of all cultures, traditions and beliefs.

  • CLOSED: This survey has concluded.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) Indigenous Health North Zone Program is conducting a confidential survey to support the development of our 2024-2029 Indigenous Health Action Plan.

The Indigenous Health Commitments: Roadmap to Wellness is an AHS document published in 2020 and serves as the blueprint for this action plan. We acknowledge the successful implementation of the Roadmap to Wellness in Alberta’s north requires ongoing and localized engagement.

By actively listening to Indigenous voices in the planning and decision-making processes, we aim to create a healthcare system that respects the diverse needs and perspectives of Indigenous communities across the North Zone.

Your input is vital as we chart a path forward – together – towards improved health outcomes, equitable services, and patient experience.

Before completing the survey, please consider the following: The Indigenous Health North Zone program works closely with other departments, including Addictions and Mental Health, and Seniors Health. Each department is responsible for setting their own priorities and outcomes. It is important to note that there is expectation that all departments align with the Indigenous Health Action Plan.
