Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) Review

HEMS – An Alberta Solution

Helicopter air ambulances provide a vital service to Albertans across the province. As we review these services, we want your feedback to ensure that the needs of all Albertans are met in the most effective way possible.

Through a full review of Alberta’s Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) program we aim to more clearly define the role of HEMS providers, unify practices and procedures across the province, and determine the most effective funding model.

We want your input!

AHS wants to ensure that Albertans have a voice in the HEMS review.

Our project team will be looking at standards (aviation and medical), governance (accountability framework) and the affordability/sustainability of HEMS in Alberta. Fixed-wing air ambulance services, ground EMS services, and Search & Rescue activities prior to medical transport are all excluded from this review.

Since launching the review on November 22, 2019, we have invited participation from stakeholders across the Province. Coming up in March, we are planning to host 2 webinars where Albertans can learn more about the HEMS Review and ask questions. Space will be limited, so if you are interested in participating please email us at HEMSReview@ahs.ca and we will connect with you once the dates are confirmed.

As always, we welcome Albertans to contact us about exploring further engagement opportunities. Please email us at HEMSReview@ahs.ca if you’d like to learn more.
