How does your community help you during cancer diagnosis?

People belong to many types of communities, including family, friends & neighbours, culture & spiritual connections, and the resources and services nearby. People's communities can play an important role in their daily life and health.

In Alberta, access to healthcare varies across communities.

In 2023-2024 the Cancer System Innovation and Integration team partnered with the Physican Learning Program and a researcher at the University of Alberta to understand which factors can affect a person's cancer diagnosis experience. We aimed to understand this experience with those who live in rural/remote communities and those who are new to Canada.

Understanding these factors can help improve access to healthcare resources by helping us find better ways to support people during their cancer diagnosis.

Below we are sharing some of the learnings and outcomes of this project.
