Foothills Medical Centre, Alberta's largest hospital, celebrated 50 years in 2016!

On June 11, 2018, AHS staff and members of the public gathered at the Royal Alexandra Hospital to celebrate the first-ever Pride event hosted at an AHS facility!

In 2018, Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary is the first hospital in Canada to use virtual reality as part of its treatment process. It has seen patients experience a 75-percent reduction in discomfort by escaping from their surroundings during painful procedures.

Supervised consumption sites approved in 2017 for Alberta for Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge and Red Deer. Supervised consumption services provide a place where people can use drugs in a monitored, hygienic environment to reduce harm from substance use while offering additional services such as counselling, social work, and opioid-dependency treatment.

On January 11, 2016, Dr. Verna Yiu was appointed as interim president and CEO of Alberta Health Services and later officially permanent on June 3, 2016.

AHS unveils a new mobile air ambulance simulator in June 2017 which is a Canadian first! The $739,000 mobile simulator will be used to train air ambulance paramedics.

AHS launches a $700,000 campaign in early 2018 to raise awareness about the province's opioid crisis and how Albertans can help save lives. This includes billboards, radio, social media and advertising on campuses, bars and public transit.

Calgary's new acute care hospital, South Health Campus, officially opens in September 2012 with out-patient clinics. The emergency department and several other units opens a few months later in January 2013. The $1.3 billion facility has 269 inpatient beds which serves Calgary and surrounding areas.

AHS introduces new 811 phone number for Health Link, the province's free 24-hour health advice and information line, on June 1, 2015.

The Alberta dementia hotline launches in the North, Central and South Zones in September 2015 and in Calgary and Edmonton in May 2016. Dial 8-1-1 any time, any day to reach Health Link staff for specialized dementia advice.

In 2018, the Lois Hole Hospital Women’s Research Centre opens in partnership with AHS, the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute, the University of Alberta and the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation.

In 2018, the Government of Alberta and University Hospital Foundation celebrate a co-investment of $24 -million towards a new neuro ICU at the University of Alberta Hospital.

In 2018, the Calgary Flames Foundation announces a gift of $1 million to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation in support of enhanced programs and respite care at Rotary Flames House – the pediatric hospice they helped to open almost 10 years ago.

In 2018, the Alberta Cancer Foundation celebrates the 30th year of the Cross Cancer Institute Golf Classic. Since 1989, the golf tournament has raised over $14.2 million in support of the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

In 2018, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation contributes $5 million towards establishing the Distinguished Researchers Program with the Stollery Science Lab. This program was developed in partnership with AHS, the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute and AHS.

In 2018, Revee Agyepong of Edmonton becomes one of the first people in Canada to receive a stem cell transplant.

In 2018, Alberta Health Services announces a new child and adolescent mental health centre will come to Calgary. The new centre will serve young people and their families with new and enhanced services, including specialized triage and the opportunity for immediate referrals to programs at the site. Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation is partnering with AHS to raise funds for the project.

In January 2018, Health Minister Sarah Hoffman announces funding for a neonatal intensive care unit in the Sturgeon Community Hospital in St. Albert. The $2.3 million investment will include an open ICU pod with four beds, two private NICU beds, a secure medication room and nursing station, and a large family washroom. The NICU will work under the expertise of the Stollery Children’s Hospital and will be equipped through $2.55 million in donations from the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.

In 2018, a permanent dialysis unit opens in Lac La Biche at the William J. Cadzow – Lac La Biche Healthcare Centre.

In 2018, the University Hospital Foundation celebrates a donation from Lorne Hooper in memory of his wife, Doreen Lutsky Hooper. The Kaye Edmonton Clinic’s rehabilitation clinic is renamed the Doreen Lutsky Hooper Rehabilitation Clinic is her honour.
