Aligning Actions to Address Indigenous-Specific Racism and Strengthen Cultural Safety in Healthcare

HSO, CIHI, and HEC shared their aligned efforts to address Indigenous‑specific racism and advance cultural safety in healthcare, guided by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis leaders.
HSO is developing a National Standard on Cultural Safety and Humility, CIHI is creating indicators to measure cultural safety and racism in the health system, and HEC has developed a Cultural Safety Pathway to support organizations on this journey.
The session highlights shared development approaches and explores how these initiatives can inform participants’ work.

This case study examines the Maternal and Newborn Health integration project that sought to create system alignment across public health, primary care and midwifery. As the work unfolded, it became clear that meaningful integration was impossible without taking the time to meaningfully engage with Indigenous communities. This sessions shares what they learned and how putting relationships first can strengthen future project planning.

For many Indigenous patients and families, healthcare can feel overwhelming or unsafe. In this session, ERHL and IWC share how they are re examining their spaces and practices to support Indigenous patients and families in feeling respected, understood, and safe within a system where harm towards Indigenous patients and families continues. Together, we explore steps you can take to make care environments more culturally safe—supporting healing, trust, and equitable care.

This session begins with an introduction to Cultural Safety Moments, led by Jesse Alook Lambrecht, including a deep dive into respectful conversations about traditional medicine use, with a focus on culturally safe communication, informed consent, and collaborative care. The session continues with Knowledge Keeper Colleen Jobin, who shared teachings about traditional medicines from a Cree (nehiyaw) perspective, offering cultural context and lived experiences that deepen understanding of traditional healing practices.
