I’m struck by the desire of healthcare providers to provide culturally safe care to their patients, and their eagerness to learn how to do so. Opportunities like this allow us to learn how the care we provide is perceived, and that’s the first step to making meaningful change.

Acute Care Alberta is committed to ensuring its Indigenous patients feel safe while in our care. Understanding their history and their culture is everyone’s responsibility and helps us all provide appropriate care. These sessions are important for all staff to take part in as we continue our journey toward reconciliation.

Across this country and this province, we share a commitment to better understanding our past. We are fortunate to have access to training and educational opportunities to support this learning and growth. National Day of Truth and Reconciliation is an opportunity for us all to reflect on our commitment to providing culturally appropriate care in every setting across Assisted Living Alberta.

I am grateful for the chance to reflect on the Truth and Reconciliation, Calls to Action, to ensure we are doing all we can as an organization to live up to these important commitments. I encourage everyone within Assisted Living Alberta to make time to participate in the day’s events.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation for AHS means that we actively integrate Indigenous and cultural learnings and practices into our facilities, and guides how we provide care.  AHS has Indigenous hospital liaisons around the province that work directly with health practitioners to improve access to culturally safe care for Indigenous patients and families. All our staff complete Indigenous awareness training and are encouraged to participate in AHS’ learning opportunities year-round. We respectfully acknowledge and honour the lived experiences, knowledge, and leadership of Indigenous staff and partners to guide and strengthen our journey towards reconciliation.
