Share Coming from a country where learning about the regional indigenous people (this included language, history and culture) as a mandatory element in schools until Grade 9 I feel so ill equipped in Canada. The citizenship test and book to study had so little about indigenous culture and was very Euro-centric. What is a good resource to really understand the pre-invasion (before Europeans came) history and culture? on Facebook Share Coming from a country where learning about the regional indigenous people (this included language, history and culture) as a mandatory element in schools until Grade 9 I feel so ill equipped in Canada. There is an interesting talk by Dr. Cindy Blackstock about NIHB funding for children found here under the bold heading ‘Jordan’s Principle.’

Dawn F asked over 2 years agoLost of Indigenous language amongst younger Indigenous generations is of concern. Over the more recent years, there have been increasing opportunities for Indigenous Language revitalization utilizing a number of communication platforms. Since there are many Indigenous languages and dialects it's challenging to have a "one stop shop" approach when seeking to address this concern. We most certainly agree the importance of language is vital and something that continues to need to be supported and advocated for.

There are a variety of options available in regards to smudging. I would recommend you reach out to one of our cultural helpers at the Royal Alex, Stollery or Indigenous Wellness Clinic to learn more. To reach them you can email indigenouswellnesscore@ahs.ca .
